YOUR LESSON DAY and TIME slot is reserved for your exclusive use every week, whether you use it or not. If you cannot attend a lesson, please notify by email, text, or phone as soon as possible. RESCHEDULING: Lessons are eligible for rescheduling, regardless of reason, IF you notify AT LEAST TWO HOURS before your lesson time (including if some, but not all, of your students are attending). OPTIONS: Students may have their lessons online at regular time; reschedule during an open slot in the schedule; or during a Flex Week. Or, if you have two or more students and only one is coming, that student can take the full amount of time. If you’re planning to be away, for example, in January, you can use your November Flex Week. Flex Weeks coincide with the following holiday weeks: Thanksgiving, M. L. King Day, and Spring Break. I will reschedule any lessons which I have cancelled. Check program calendar or website to see if studio is open on holidays, etc. There are 36 lessons built into the school year. ONE rescheduled lesson per quarter is guaranteed. Missed rescheduled lessons cannot be rescheduled again. Makeup lessons expire at the end of each quarter. TUITION FEES REMAIN THE SAME NO MATTER HOW MANY LESSONS ARE ATTENDED. Please see Annual Membership Plan/Tuition Fees page for more information. Tuition fees are kept affordable in consideration that not all missed lessons can be rescheduled. ILLNESS: Please do not bring student in for a lesson with a contagious illness. They will not do well, and it is unfair to other students. Too sick for school is too sick for lessons. No fever, frequent coughing/sneezing, or diarrhea/vomiting within 24 hours, please. INJURIES: Injury of a hand or arm is not necessarily a reason to take a break from lessons. The student can work with the uninjured hand, listening skills, music theory, rhythm, etc. SNOW POLICY: If schools are closed or driving conditions are unsafe, PLEASE notify if you are canceling. Otherwise, I won’t know who is coming or not, as some schools may be closed and not others, some parents will drive in snow, and road conditions may improve during the day. Online lessons are usually done on snow days, but if not possible, ONE snow day may be rescheduled per Quarter.
LESSON LENGTH may vary. For example, a 30-minute lesson may only have 25 minutes of instructional time due to getting child settled in, restroom breaks, etc. Also, as student progresses, lesson length will need to increase, for example, from 30 minutes to 45.
TIMELINESS: If you are late, you will have the remaining time for your lesson. Time missed because of lateness is not made up. If you arrive early, you are welcome to sit in on the lesson before yours. If your lesson is first, the door will be open about five minutes before your lesson time.
SUMMER LESSONS: The program continues through the summer. Students progress much better when there is not a long break in the summer, and they do not need to spend time in the fall re-learning old material. Please see Summer Session page. PARKING: In consideration of other parents, please do not block the driveway (please park diagonally on the right). Please supervise children outside and keep them away from the road.
RESTROOM: Please have students use the restroom before leaving home or school. We have a “vintage” septic system which requires water conservation. Thank you for understanding. DROPPING STUDENTS OFF: Students 8 and over may be dropped off. Parents who help their children practice, or whose children are under 8, should sit in on lessons. Older students often do better when parents are NOT at lessons. Parents of special needs students must stay. BINDERS: At the beginning of the school year or beginning lessons, please supply a 3-ring binder for sheet music, practice notes, handouts, etc. Please bring the binder and music books to every lesson.
PRACTICE: Please treat practicing like other homework and expect it to be done each day. Unprepared lessons cost the same as prepared ones but their value is substantially compromised. Your investment in your children’s music education will reap rewards if you take time to encourage practice. Let me know if you need practice ideas.
TIME OFF/DISCONTINUING: Please speak with me if student is showing decreased interest. A change in approach, different music, books, and activities usually help. Taking action early is the best approach, and taking a break is usually counterproductive. If taking a break from lessons, your spot may be held by paying ½ tuition for time off. Every student stops taking lessons at some point. Please make this decision thoughtfully with plenty of discussion between the teacher, parent, and student so that lessons can cease with a positive sense of closure. One month’s paid notice is required when discontinuing during the school year. At the discretion of the teacher, students may be asked to discontinue lessons at any time if they have unpaid tuition, an excess amount of absences/unprepared lessons, or if they show a lack of interest or refusal to cooperate during lessons. Paid tuition fees are not refunded when discontinuing lessons.
